Based on a true story, Indecent recalls a historical moment for the Broadway community that is not well-known.

Playwright Sholem Asch (Max Gordon Moore) wrote the play Got fun Nekomeh in Yiddish in 1906. When it was translated to English as God of Vengeance and performed on Broadway in 1923, the original cast was arrested on the grounds of obscenity.

This is an absolutely gorgeous production. Many of the actors portray different characters and they dive into each role.

It’s interesting to think of what was labeled as obscene in this time period. God of Vengeance was condemned for its romance between two women, while Oedipus Rex – a play featuring an incestuous mother-son relationship – was also on Broadway. The beauty with which they portray this same-sex relationship is emotionally gripping.

Final say: Absolutely riveting. ★★★★★
