A classic musical is kept true to its form in this revival.
Set in 1884, Act I follows painter Georges Seraut (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he studies for what will be his most memorable painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. He leads his lover Dot (Annaleigh Ashford) on but is consumed by his work. Set in 1984, Act II follows Georges’ great-grandson George (Gyllenhaal), who is also an artist.
Gyllenhaal is outstanding in the titular role. He gets lost in the character and you forget who he actually his. He’s accompanied by an incredible ensemble whom are entertaining in their various roles.
Act I of this show is much more engaging than Act II, which really isn’t the best until it melts back with Act I.
Final say: A great first half with an okay second. ★★★☆☆
