Based on a compelling true story, creator and director Ava DuVernay brings the injustice of the Central Park Five to life.
In 1989, teenagers Kevin Richardson (Asante Blackk), Antron McCray (Caleel Harris), Yusef Salaam (Ethan Herisse), Korey Wise (Jharrel Jerome) and Raymond Santana (Marquis Rodriguez) were coerced into admitting to the assault and rape of Trisha Meili (Alexandra Templer) and sentenced to jail.
Many of the images in this series are disturbing to watch and are intended to make the audience nervous. The crimes committed against these boys that resulted in their incarceration highlight many social issues. It’ll make you question what’s currently happening in our justice system.
The cast is top notch. In addition to the five boys, Vera Farmiga, Niecy Nash and Michael K. Williams give notable performances.
Final say: Perfect execution of an intense subject. ★★★★★
