When the moment comes to make a huge life decision, life can become daunting.
Irish girl Eilis Lacey can’t find work in Ireland, but gains sponsorship to move and work in America. When she goes and begins working in a department store, she is at first extremely homesick. Soon she falls in love, but a personal tragedy will send her back to Ireland where she’ll rethink her life choices.
This story stole my heart. Tóibín writes vividly and creates beautiful pictures of American and Irish culture in the 1950s. The characters have distinct personalities and all affect Eilis in different ways.
Eilis’ decision is absolutely heart-wrenching. You’ll see both sides of the fight and feel the strain of the decision as if you’re the one making it.
Final say: The easiest decision is to read this. ★★★★☆
