Released: January 24, 2019
By: Weezer
Following the release of their cover of Toto’s “Africa,” rock band Weezer released their twelfth album full of cover songs.
What’s interesting about the band is that they sound good on every song. It shows the versatility of their sound and frontman River Cuomo’s voice. However, most of the songs don’t sound any different than their original release.
One song that is vastly different from the original and a standout on the album is TLC’s “No Scrubs.” Weezer takes the R&B classic and makes it into a rock song without changing the gender of the original lyrics.
Other songs sound great including the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” However, the originals are just as good, if not better, to listen to.
Final say: Fun but unnecessary. ★★★☆☆
