The ninth studio album from the Motown group led by Diana Ross, The Supremes A’ Go-Go was the first album from a female group to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts in the United States.
Composed mostly of cover songs by other artists – a majority Motown – this album debuted just two original songs: “Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart” and the long-lasting “You Can’t Hurry Love.” The latter is one of the groups best of all-time and is instantly catchy.
The cover songs are all good with some – like the danceable “This Old Heart of Mine” – better than others – like the lackluster “Hang On Sloopy.” One of the other great moments is “Come and Get These Memories,” which is a rare Mary Wilson led song.
Final say: Fun if not lasting. ★★★☆☆
