Another classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, The King and I has only become a stronger show since it originally premiered on Broadway in 1951.
Anna Leonowens (Laura Michelle Kelly) is hired by King Mongkut (Jose Llana) as a schoolteacher for some of his many children as he tries to modernize the country of Siam to bring to the world.
As with the 2015 revival that this national tour is based on, the show has been modernized. The sets are stripped down to reflect what Siam would look like at the time period, while the King and Anna’s storyline removes almost all romance and is kept professional.
Kelly is a dream as Anna. Her vocals soar and she is perfectly acts out every moment of the show.
Final say: We’ve dreamed of a show this beautiful. ★★★★★
