What starts as a slightly dull show becomes a tour de force of comedy that is sure to entertain a variety of audiences.
It’s Rebecca (Sierra Boggess) and Brian’s (David Burtka) wedding day and Rebecca’s sister Jenny (Lisa Howard) has planned the perfect wedding. But between the two mothers – Judy (Tyne Daly) and Georgette (Harriet Harris) – and the return of Rebecca’s ex Marty (Josh Grisetti), perfect falls apart quickly.
The show – directed by Tony-winning actor David Hyde Pierce – follows a typical wedding comedy plot throughout the first half of the show, but some great plot twists happen at the midpoint that completely changes the direction from then on. Some may be predicted by the audience, but they follow-through is wonderful.
While the music isn’t memorable, Howard gives a show-stopping performance with “Jenny’s Blues.”
Final say: A wonderfully heartwarming musical. ★★★★☆
