Based on the 1983 film and 2012 musical of the same name, A Christmas Story is a fun holiday celebration but a bit too long.
The adult Ralphie Parker (Matthew Broderick) recounts the story of his nine-year-old self (Andy Walken) wanting a Red Ryder Carbine Action BB gun for Christmas one year.
With an incredible cast, this show shines. Maya Rudolph and Chris Diamantopolous bring spirit and energy to Ralphie’s parents, and what Rudolph lacks in vocals is completely made up in the heart of her character. Jane Krakowsi and Ana Gasteyer are brilliant in their minor roles.
However, the show seems to go on forever. Some of the songs feel unnecessary or too much like the others. It’s not hard to lose interest partway through.
Final say: Better than the movie, but not as good as the stage show. ★★★☆☆
