The original film that launched a torture porn franchise, Saw is horror classic that makes you think about the choices in your life.
Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) wake up in a dark room to find them being held hostage and watched by someone. They soon realize they’re in the middle of a game where they have to make tough decisions as a punishment for acts they committed in the past.
Unlike its following sequels, Saw is more ingrained in the actual storyline and what brought these two men to this point. The torture and blood is kept at a minimum. Due to this, the intensity level is higher making it scarier.
Whannell is fantastic in the lead role, while more established actors like Elwes and Danny Glover are laughable.
Final say: A bold franchise starter. ★★★★☆
