One of the edgiest musicals Broadway has seen, Spring Awakening has become a favorite.
Set in 19th century Germany, teenagers begin to discover their sexuality. A forbidden topic of conversation, their inability to talk to the adults around them creates uncertainty. They also struggle through school and what society expects of them.
While set centuries ago, the story feels just as relevant now. Teenage angst and finding a place in the world are topics that continue with each generation.
The music – by Grammy nominee Duncan Sheik – is a stark contrast from the rest of the story. It brings modern rock and pop to the stage. Songs like “The Bitch of Living” and “Totally Fucked” bring out the angst and anger of teens, while “Left Behind” brings a sad tenderness to the show.
Final say: Beautifully different and so special. ★★★★★
