Elton John brings together some of today’s biggest artists to reinvent hit songs that he created with Bernie Taupin.
The album starts with John’s voice singing part of his iconic hit “Bennie and the Jets,” but quickly changes into a more pop/hip-hop version from Pink and Logic. It’s the perfect way to start the album.
There are hits and misses with Ed Sheeran’s “Candle in the Wind” and Sam Smith’s “Daniel” being among the best. Both men bring their own flair into the songs that rival the original cuts. At the same time, Q-Tip and Demi Lovato falter on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which loses the original’s energy.
Surprisingly, the biggest disappointment might be Lady Gaga’s “Your Song.” She sounds incredible, but robotic. Her lack of emotion kills the song.
Final say: Excellently brings John to a new generation. ★★★☆☆
