Tom Ripley is sent to Mongibello, Italy by the father of Dickie Greenleaf to retrieve his son from his extravagant lifestyle. Upon his arrival, Tom becomes obsessed with Dickie. After a misstep, Tom’s life goes into a downward spiral.
The beauty of this story is that although it’s told in a third person narrative, you still end up deep inside Tom’s unstable mind. You’ll feel uncomfortable with the storyline as you continue and want to stop, but won’t be able to.
However, parts of the story drag along and you’ll wonder how Tom gets away with everything. His character becomes sickening – in a good way – but it may turn you off.
Final say: Worth the weird feelings you’ll have. ★★★☆☆
