Original movie musicals rarely treat us anymore, but this gem brings enough spectacle to make up for the losses.

Based on the life of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman), the film explores the events in his life that led him to create his famous circus and the early struggles of having “freaks” as the main attraction.

Music and lyrics by Tony- and Oscar-winning composers Benj Pasek & Justin Paul and choreography by Ashley Wallen bring the old-time story into modern times and to striking heights. Pasek & Paul continue to prove they’re the strongest new voices in the industry.

Jackman and Zac Efron, as always, prove they’re two of the greatest showmen around, but the biggest cast props go to Broadway performer Keala Settle, who will break your heart with her big solo “This is Me.”

Final say: The greatest show. ★★★★★
