Film: Victoria & Abdul

Opened: September 22, 2017

Directed by: Stephen Frears

Starring: Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Eddie Izzard, Adeel Akhtar, Paul Higgins & Michael Gambon

The incredible thing about this film is that it brings a very unknown story of racial acceptance to light years after it occurred.

In the final years of her life, Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) is presented with a mohur during her Golden Jubilee from Abdul Karim (Ali Farzad). Abdul traveled to England all the way from Agra, India and makes quite the impression on the recluse queen. The two strike up a friendship that lasts through the end of her life, though she is pushed by many of high power to cut all ties with him.

Dench is absolutely brilliant and a joy to watch as Queen Victoria. As she is learning about the Indian culture from Abdul, you can see such a pure interest and happiness at what she is doing.

Final say: A bit zany, but Dench triumphs. ★★★☆☆
