I don’t know about you but whenever a film deals with little kids sadly struggling with their adult figures, I just break down in tears. This film is no exception.
Chris Evans plays Frank Adler, a man who inherits his seven-year-old niece – Mary (McKenna Grace) – after his sister commits suicide. The Adler family is extremely talented in mathematics and when Mary enters kindergarten, she shows the same talents. Her grandmother (Lindsay Duncan) becomes interested and fights Frank for custody.
While the cast is full of extremely talented and well-established actors, the breakout star is Grace. She brings comedy, smarts and pain to this young girl that actresses 20 years her senior couldn’t.
The one flaw in the storyline is the lousy decision of the court case.
Final say: Make sure you have a big box of tissues. ★★★★☆
