When I first saw the trailer for Collateral Beauty, it seemed like a recipe for success. An intriguing storyline + an incredible cast + a holiday release… everything looked amazing. But that doesn’t mean it’ll work out that way.
The film stars Will Smith as a man grieving from the tragic loss of his young daughter years after her death. His coworkers try to intervene by having personifications of Death, Time and Love help him move on.
While the overall storyline is heart wrenching, there are too many subplots that each feel like they could be their own film. All of it makes the flow feel disjointed. While Smith is stellar, the rest of the cast (especially Kate Winslet) don’t seem sold on the film and have rigid performances at best.
Final say: Watch the trailer and imagine the rest. ★☆☆☆☆
