Premiered: April 7, 2017
Directed By: Nacho Vigalondo
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell & Tim Blake Nelson
When I first saw the trailer for Colossal, I was so enthralled by the concept. Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, monsters, comedy… there wasn’t anything quite like it.
Gloria (Hathaway) is kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens) because of her constant drinking. She decides to move back to her hometown. Oscar (Sudeikis), her childhood friend, gives her a job at his bar. Soon, both Gloria and Oscar find that when they enter a playground at night, they become monsters in Seoul.
About halfway through the film, the script takes a darker turn. At this point, much of the comedy disappears, yet I still found it to be an intriguing story. Hathaway gives an incredible performance, though Sudeikis left me confused and not sure what his character ever meant.
Final say: This movie may terrorize you. ★★☆☆☆
