Based on the 2007 film written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress follows the story of waitress and pie maker Jenna (Jessie Mueller) who is in an unhappy marriage, but becomes pregnant. Her life becomes crazy when she unexpectedly starts having an affair with her married gynecologist (Drew Gehling).
With music and lyrics by Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, the storyline is propelled forward by both comical and heartbreaking songs. Jenna has a standout solo in Act 2 with “She Used to Be Mine” and Ogie (Christopher Fitzgerald) hilariously makes his entrance with the stalker song “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me.”
The show is sweet and has its tender moments about dealing with life when you’re at your worst moments. A happy ending does occur, but maybe not what you’d predict.
Final say: Grab a table and enjoy the pie. ★★★★★
