After closing on Broadway shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, Waitress returned to for a limited run after theaters began to reopen.
Waitress and piemaker Jenna Hunterson (Sara Bareilles) is upset after becoming pregnant with her abusive husband Earl’s (Joe Tippett) baby. When she meets her new gynecologist Dr. Pomatter (Drew Gehling), they enter an affair while she figures out how to leave Earl.
Bareilles is illuminating as Jenna and watching her perform the music she created is magical. She and Gehling – reprising his role from the original Broadway cast – have great chemistry, which makes you cheer for them knowing their actions are wrong.
Despite the many infidelities in the show and having to watch Jenna stuck in an abusive relationship, the show has such a warm feeling and is a comfort to experience.
