Offering many references to well-known Italian American films The Godfather and Eat Pray Love, this is a self-discovery journey you can easily refuse.
Upon the death of her grandfather Giuseppe (Alessandro Bressanello), overworked and underappreciated mother Kristin (Toni Collette) finds out she has been chosen to take over the Balbano Crime Family. As she wearily accepts her new position, she finds a new version of herself.
Collette is a reliable lead, but she gets stuck with a character who is poorly written. Kristin is often overzealous and forcing her personality to the extremes. You’ll still cheer for her, but you’ll roll your eyes doing it.
The script falls into many clichés and stereotypes Italians. Comedic moments are forced, and all of the characters are forced into stereotypes that keep them one-note.
Final say: Una vergogna (a disappointment). ★☆☆☆☆
