A prequel to the events of Grease, Rise of the Pink Ladies show how the iconic girl gang was formed with new songs that may not reach the legendary status of the original film’s but are fantastically catchy and well-choreographed.

Four outcasts at Rydell High – Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) and Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara) – band together and become the Pink Ladies. They fight against school and jock policies as Jane runs for class president against her former flame Buddy (Jason Schmidt).

While the show may not feel like the Grease we love, it’s able to create a fantastic throwback world with many references to the film and a feminist approach to the male-dominated society. Notartomaso and Fukuhara have the best-written characters and bring heart, comedy and strong voices to them.

Final say: Think pink. ★★★★☆
