Released: November 8, 2019
By: Leslie Odom Jr.
On his third studio album, Tony- and Grammy-winner Leslie Odom Jr. hits all the right notes – even if the songs aren’t positioned in the correct order.
The album contains a multitude of sounds but dives deeply into pop and jazz. When he leans into the former, Odom has what it takes to be a certifiable pop star. However, his album kicks off with a jazzy piano number that might alienate listeners instead of drawing them in.
Perhaps the greatest song on this album is the penultimate track “Remember Black.” The song takes you on a musical journey of sounds that originated in the black community but have become more popular by white artists. He’s not saying that they shouldn’t embrace it, but to remember how much of music is rooted in black culture.
Final say: The track list needs rearranging. ★★★☆☆
