Adapting the epic animated film into a stage musical, The Prince of Egypt creates a visually stunning show with lagging songs.
When Moses (Luke Brady) learns that he’s not the son of Seti (Joe Dixon), he’s given his destiny by God that he needs to return home and confront his brother Ramses (Liam Tamne) to free his people from slavery.
The second act features the plagues that God sends down into Egypt and while the animation would seem hard to depict onstage, it’s done breathtakingly – especially in the case of the dying children.
Lengthening a 99-minute film into a 2.5 hour two-act production equates to additional musical numbers, but none of them live up to the precedent of the original songs. With most being ballads, they bring down the energy of the show.
Final say: Contains weak links. ★★★☆☆
