Starring: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sian Clifford, Olivia Colman, Bill Paterson, Brett Gelman, Hugh Skinner, Hugh Dennis, Ben Aldridge, Jenny Rainsford & Jamie Demetriou
Phoebe Waller-Bridge takes the oddness and somewhat sad comedy from her one-woman show and creates a fantastic series that brings great emotional depth.
Fleabag (Waller-Bridge) is struggling to run the café that she opened with her deceased friend Boo (Jenny Rainsford). She has an odd bond with her sister Claire (Sian Clifford) and a strained relationship with her godmother/stepmother (Olivia Colman).
By allowing her to constantly break the fourth wall and speak to the audience, the connection between Fleabag and the viewer is made stronger as you view her internal commentary. We all know the feelings that she keeps in, even if dare not to admit them.
Waller-Bridge is unsurprisingly perfect, and the awkwardness that comes from her interactions with Colman’s characters are brilliant. The female relationships are more compelling than any of the men.
Final say: A beautiful mess. ★★★★★
