Opened: September 9, 2013

Directed by: Ned Benson

Starring: James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Ciarán Hinds, Nina Arianda, Nikki M. James, Isabelle Huppert, Christian Coulson, Jeremy Shamos & Viola Davis

One-third of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby story, Him follows the heartbreaking side of Conor (James McAvoy) who seems powerless in the dissolution of his relationship.

After losing their son, Eleanor (Jessica Chastain) is not mentally well and decides to leave Conor. While dealing with his crumbling personal life, Conor’s pub is financially struggling. Conor moves in with his dad (Ciarán Hinds), who tries to persuade him to work at his restaurant.

McAvoy gives a compelling performance. Though you see Conor making some bad decisions, it’s easy to feel sympathetic through McAvoy’s choices.

The story begs for additional focus on the grieving father part. So much of Conor’s side is focused on his determination to keep his relationship going that we don’t get to see how losing a child has affected him.

Final say: He is easy to understand. ★★★☆☆
