Exploring the relationship dynamics between two intertwining couples, Closer is a brilliant film contained to its few characters.
Dan (Jude Law) meets Alice (Natalie Portman) when she gets hit by a car crossing the road. They start a relationship, but Dan also becomes infatuated with photographer Anna (Julia Roberts). After a practical joke has unintended consequences, Anna begins dating Larry (Clive Owen).
Even if you didn’t know beforehand, you can tell that this film is based off a play. Patrick Marber adapts his stage work for the screen and while it still feels strongly like a play, the actors do a fantastic job connecting with each other through the material. There’s an intensity and hypocriticalness that’s fun to explore.
Portman and Owen stand out further as the pawns in their respective relationships.
Final say: Closer will draw you in. ★★★★☆
