Film: What Maisie Knew

Opened: May 3, 2013

Directed by: Scott McGehee & David Siegel

Starring: Onata Aprile, Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgård, Joanna Vanderham & Steve Coogan

Following a storyline that’s similar to Kramer vs. Kramer and Marriage Story, what sets What Maisie Knew apart is the focus mainly being on the child in the divorce.

Susanna (Julianne Moore) and Beale (Steve Coogan) are in a bitter custody battle over their daughter Maisie (Onata Aprile). Due to their busy work schedules, Maisie ends up spending more time with their new partners Lincoln (Alexander Skarsgård) and Margo (Joanna Vanderham).

The script and camera work leans in empathetically towards Maisie’s situation. Aprile plays her with such innocence, and you’ll feel bad watching her be neglected and used as a pawn. Moore brings great conflict with Susanna. At times, you can see her trying, but you often notice her self-involvement more.

Focusing on Maisie more allows for deeper emotions as you see the effects on her.

Final say: Poor Maisie. ★★★★★
