Writer and director Noah Baumbach makes the most subtle moments absolutely heartbreaking in Marriage Story, which is somewhat reminiscent of Kramer v. Kramer.
Nicole and Charlie Barber (Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver) are both artistic but when their dreams diverge paths, their relationship becomes strained. They decide to divorce and argue about whom will take custody of their son Henry (Azhy Robertson).
The lead actors give stellar performances that are full of passionate emotions. Parts will make you laugh while others will reduce you to tears. Supporting star Laura Dern – as Nicole’s lawyer Fiona – is a scene-stealer.
While the subject matter is devastating, the story feels so personal. The familial bonds between in-laws and what you’re willing to do for someone you love even when you’re not in love really crushes the viewer.
Final say: Heartbreakingly beautiful. ★★★★☆
