A first glance at Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands would make you think this is a horror, but the only horror in this beautifully tragic film are the “normal” people in the neighborhood.

When Peg (Dianne Wiest) wanders up to the abandoned mansion overlooking town, she’s surprised to find Edward (Depp) – a non-human creation with scissors for hands. She has him come home with her and while the neighbors are accepting at first, one person helps incite terror about Edward.

The film has great commentary on what happens when a group of people jump onto the ideals of another, even when they’re unfounded. Seeing the initial acceptance of Edward is beautiful, but his later ostracizing is heartbreaking.

Depp is fantastic in a largely silent role and displays Edward’s tenderness gracefully.

Final say: Society creates its own problems. ★★★★★
