Wildly outdated by today’s technology, You’ve Got Mail still manages to be an adorable rom-com inspired by Miklós László’s Parfumerie, which also inspired The Shop Around the Corner and She Loves Me.
Kathleen (Meg Ryan) runs an independent bookstore, which is facing stiff competition from Fox Books, a large chain run by Joe (Tom Hanks). Kathleen and Joe email their anonymous pen pals – which unbeknownst to them are each other.
It’s hard to resist the charm of the Hanks-Ryan pairing. In their third rom-com together, their chemistry is palpable but still fresh. It’s fun to be in on their secret as you wait for them to discover it themselves.
However, the film is an AOL ad with dial-up internet. Younger generations won’t understand that concept and it makes the film date itself.
