A brilliant war epic that deserves to take its place amongst the greats, The Woman King is a spectacle with its story, design and a career-high performance from Viola Davis.

When the Agojie – the Dahomey’s all-female army led by General Nanisca (Davis) – free women abducted by slavers from the Oyo Empire, Dahomey’s King Ghezo (John Boyega) prepares for a war against the Oyo. Nanisca trains a new group of warriors, including the impulsive Nawi (Thuso Mbedu).

The production fully embodies the African spirit from costumes to diverse history to the chants of the warriors. It rivals Black Panther in this sense, though both more than succeed.

Davis presents triumphant strength in Nanisca but allows her to be human with deeply vulnerable moments. She spars well with Mbedu, who couldn’t be better in this breakout role.

Final say: She is king. ★★★★★
