Alaska has made quite a name for herself after winning season two of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and while this album gives some nods to the franchise, she’s able to break free of the drag queen stereotype.
The album has a mixture of sounds from the 1990s and 2000s, which gives great nostalgia. “XOXOY2K” gives tastes of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” while being a club-ready hit.
Meanwhile, “Girlz Night” featuring Stephanie’s Child – Lagoona Bloo and Drag Race alums Jan and Rosé – is a perfect girl group song that gives early Little Mix vibes.
However, the best song comes in “22” where Alaska talks to a younger version of herself about the bright future ahead despite hard times in her formative years.
Final say: Alaska is not just a state or a drag queen, but also a pop star. ★★★★☆
