Almost 20 years after its release, Shrek 2 remains not just one of the greatest sequels of all-time, but also one of the greatest animated movies of all-time.
Shortly after their honeymoon, Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) are invited to Fiona’s home to be welcomed by her parents Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews) and King Harold (John Cleese). However, Harold made a promise with the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) that Fiona would marry Prince Charming (Rupert Everett).
Similar to what made Toy Story 2 so successful, Shrek 2 builds upon its already well-established characters by adding in new interesting ones – with an A-list vocal cast – and creating an unsuspecting villain. Saunders’ Fairy Godmother is better than the original’s Lord Farquaad and has an epic musical number that defines a generation.
Final say: A happily ever after indeed. ★★★★★
