Released the same year as the miniseries Gaslit, The Martha Mitchell Effect proves how Washington made a spectacle of a woman who was telling the truth.
In the early 1970s, Martha Mitchell was a powerful name out of Washington, D.C., as the wife of Attorney General John Mitchell. Her outspokenness bothered Nixon, so he made sure she looked crazy when she made true claims about Watergate.
This short documentary is made fully of stock footage and voiceovers. Portions of the audio are taken directly from the tapes Nixon had set up to record his conversations. It shows how Nixon is ultimately the one to blame in his own downfall.
It’s a riveting history lesson that you don’t often hear about and is contained in a runtime that keeps you engaged fully.
Final say: Martha has quite the affect. ★★★★★
