Transferring from New York City Center and opening less than a year after Stephen Sondheim’s death, Into the Woods is a perfect tribute to the late composer.
A baker (Brian d’Arcy James), his wife (Stephanie J. Block), young Jack (Cole Thompson), Cinderella (Denée Benton) and Little Red Riding Hood (Katy Geraghty) enter the woods for different purposes. When a giant (Annie Golden) appears, their worlds will never be the same.
This is a beautifully stripped-down performance with the orchestra onstage and few set pieces. Because of this, you can focus on the all-star cast filled with Broadway legends and some future greats, including scene-stealing Milky White puppeteer Kennedy Kanagawa.
Sondheim and Lapine’s great blend of comedy and drama is executed well and Montego Glover (The Witch) does this better than anyone.
Final say: Into the woods we will always go. ★★★★★
