Co-writer and star Billy Eichner was so focused on making a gay film with an entirely openly LGBTQ+ principal cast that he forgot to make his characters likeable, and that is where Bros falters.
National LGBTQ+ History Museum Curator Bobby Lieber (Eichner) goes to a nightclub and spots the attractive Aaron Shepard (Luke Macfarlane). They connect a bit, but the pair’s energy takes a while to match up.
Eichner is funny, but he’s a hard personality to handle, which is exactly how Bobby is. What may turn away a lot of audiences, including LGBTQ+ audiences, is that the gayness is constantly thrown at you. And while I get and applaud that Eichner wanted this to be as gay as possible, it’s hard to enjoy when the messages are being shouted at you.
Final say: Acquaintances, not bros. ★★★☆☆
