Though The Watcher is based on a true story, creator Ryan Murphy loves to take creative license and make a mess.
Nora and Dean Brannock (Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) decide to move from New York City into the suburbs of New Jersey. They begin getting threatening letters from someone called “The Watcher.”
Like most Murphy projects, The Watcher starts off strong. The cast is incredible – with the paranoid Watts and Cannavale being standouts – and the material is freaky. Just the voice of the Watcher is enough to induce chills.
But midway through – or arguably as early as episode two – the plot lines become crazily jam-packed. By the end – reflecting real life – there’s still no answer as to who the Watcher is, and it makes you wonder what every crazy theory was about.
Final say: Where did Richard Kind go? ★★☆☆☆
