In his feature film directorial debut, Lin-Manuel Miranda beautifully pays homage to legendary Rent composer Jonathan Larson and musical theater in general.
Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) is on the precipice of something amazing as he struggles to finish his first full-length musical. His girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp) is offered an out-of-town job and his best friend Michael (Robin de Jesús) moves out of their apartment. Many of Jonathan’s friends are being affected by the AIDS epidemic at the start of the decade.
Miranda was incredibly smart in making sure almost the entire cast is somehow involved in the theater industry. Garfield is brilliant as Larson while showing off a fantastic voice.
Keep a lookout for an insane number of cameos from theater greats (including a few original Broadway cast members of Rent).
Final say: A defining and lasting musical. ★★★★★
