Finally opening over a year after it was supposed to return to Broadway, Caroline, Or Change is not as affecting as some of the racially charged shows currently running.
Caroline (Sharon D. Clarke) is a maid working for the Gellman family. Rose Gellman (Caissie Levy) is aware of Caroline’s financial situation and is embarrassed at how much change her stepson Noah (Gabriel Amoroso, Adam Makké and Jaden Myles Waldman alternating) leaves in his pockets.
Caroline and Rose’s relationship could dive into white savior territory, but unlike the similarly structured film The Help, playwright Tony Kushner never allows for the trope to take over.
Clarke is brilliant as Caroline and her voice is enough to give you chills. Levy is also a great supporter and provides laughs between her dialogue and inner monologues.
Final say: Not quite making a change. ★★★☆☆
