On: Apple TV+

Co-developers and stars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt make one of the best comedic series of the year with stellar writing that is both brilliantly funny and emotionally mature.

AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) brings American college football coach Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) overseas to be the new head coach of her team. Lasso refuses to let his rough start deter him from making a difference to his team.

Every actor is perfectly casted from headliners Sudeikis and Waddingham to all the footballers. Brett Goldstein gives Captain Roy Kent an often hilariously subtle soft side while remaining unfazed by everyone.

The joy here isn’t what happens on the pitch though, it’s about the life lessons the characters learn along the way. There’s stellar character development, especially with Rebecca and Juno Temple’s Keeley.

Final say: Premier entertainment. ★★★★★
