While its premise never stays fully grounded, Hunters is a fun period-action-thriller that pulls from history while remaining authentically original.

After Ruth Heidelbaum (Jeannie Berlin) is murdered in her home, her grandson Jonah (Logan Lerman) finds out she was a Nazi hunter with a team led by philanthropist Meyer Offerman (Al Pacino). Despite the team’s initial hesitation, Jonah joins the team to help track down her killer.

Pacino and Lerman both give solid performances as their lead characters, but it’s supporting actress Carol Kane as Mindy Markowitz who – as usual with Kane – steals all her scenes. The actors playing the young versions of Meyer and Ruth also shine in gritty flashbacks to the concentration camps.

The ending is rocky, but you can forgive it based on the strong season leading up to then.

Final say: Hunters just misses the bullseye. ★★★★☆
