Though the storyline follows the same romance in a post-apocalyptic world formula that The Hunger Games and Divergent also employ, How I Live Now feels like two distinctive movies that don’t quite fit together.
Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) is sent to live with her cousins Eddie (George MacKay), Isaac (Tom Holland) and Piper (Harley Bird) for the summer. When a bomb devastates London, the family learns to survive on their own as Daisy and Eddie fall in love. Soon, evacuations separate the family.
Even though Ronan and MacKay have good chemistry, the audience is alienated by an incestual couple. As much as you root for the family to get back together, you don’t for the couple.
The first half feels like a coming-of-age independent film while the second half is starkly different as a dark drama.
Final say: It never clicks. ★★☆☆☆
