Director and writer Guy Ritchie balances comedy and action well in this perfectly styled and well-acted crime film.

When Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) snubs tabloid editor Big Dave (Eddie Marsan) at a party, Dave hires Fletcher (Hugh Grant) to investigate Mickey as he decides to sell his marijuana business. Fletcher wagers £20,000,000 with Mickey’s right-hand man, Raymond (Charlie Hunnam), for his findings.

Though both appear throughout the main storyline as well, Fletcher and Raymond frame the storyline in present day referring to previous events. Grant and Hunnam have a great back-and-forth dynamic that is just as entertaining as the rest of the action.

While there’s a lot going on and it’s sometimes confusing to keep track of who’s connected to whom, the storylines all converge for a great ending.

Final say: Highly original. ★★★★☆
