Based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name, The Witches is really a cautionary tale for child endangerment and kidnapping.
After the death of his parents, Luke Eveshim (Jasen Fisher) goes to live with his witch-hunting Grandma Helga (Mai Zetterling). Luke and Helga end up in a hotel where the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) is holding her annual meeting.
Huston is incredible as always and the transformative prosthetics used to reveal her true witch form are terrifying. The plot alone is enough to scare children and then their first glance at her will haunt them for time to come.
As this was pre-CGI days, the mice used in the film are Jim Henson puppets that look just as good as if CGI mice were to be used.
Final say: Exciting and terrifying start to finish. ★★★★☆
