Those nostalgic for Doris Day and Rock Hudson films of the past will love this smart romantic comedy that brings back another era.
When Barbara Novak (Renée Zellweger) publishes her hit book that encourages women to stand up for themselves and enjoy sex without love, journalist Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor) goes undercover as astronaut Zip Martin to make her go against her ways and fall in love with him.
The script is so-well written and plays to the wordy comedies of the 1960s. While Zellweger and McGregor are both great and deliver the lines without a moment’s hesitation, supporting actors Sarah Paulson – as Barbara’s editor – and David Hyde Pierce – as Catcher’s boss – are just as comedic and memorable as the leads.
With a fun, feminist edge and twist ending, there’s not a dull moment.
Final say: Nostalgia at its best. ★★★★★
