Ten years after the premiere of the original, the characters of Mamma Mia are back for a second round. And while this iteration is definitely cornier than the first, it’s still incredible fun.
After the Donna’s (Meryl Streep) death, her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) renovates the hotel on Kalokairi. The film also flashbacks to a young Donna (Lily James) as she encounters the young Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan) & Sam (Jeremy Irvine).
While many of the best ABBA songs were used in the first movie, this one finds ways to use others. Many of them require the story being led in their direction, but that can be forgiven by the incredible staging.
The returning cast is as strong as ever, while the newcomers really capture the essence of the older counterparts.
Final say: I’ll go again and again. ★★★★☆
