Film: Disobedience

Opened: April 27, 2018

Directed by: Sebastián Lelio

Starring: Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, Alessandro Nivola & Anton Lesser

Stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams bring one of the most passionate love affairs to the screen in a film that was hideously overlooked by awards.

After the death of her father Rav Krushka (Anton Lesser), Ronit (Weisz) returns home. Not practicing the Orthodox Jewish culture, Ronit is seen as an outcast among those mourning. She’s reunited with childhood friends Dovid (Alessandro Nivola) and Esti (McAdams), and soon her romantic affair with Esti from years ago is rekindled.

The commentary on religion here is compelling. Watching Ronit and Esti both struggle with their religion on opposite ends of the spectrum – Ronit has left the life behind while Esti conforms – shows flaws in the religious order.

Weisz and McAdams have an instant connection and their love scenes are extremely intimate.

Final say: The forbidden romance versus ★★★★☆
