While Alex Strangelove is an entertaining self-discovery and coming-of-age film, there’s something about it that seems unrealistic.
Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) begins dating his best friend Claire (Madeline Weinstein), but hasn’t had sex with her yet. As he plans their special night, he meets Elliot (Antonio Marziale) at a party and begins to have feelings for him. Alex now has to figure out his love life.
In the lead role, Doheny is awkwardly entertaining and puts a lot of heart into Alex. You’ll sympathize with his internal struggle and root for him to understand himself. The issue is that the actions and reactions of a majority of the other teenage characters feels forced and/or unnatural.
Both of the romantic interests are well-developed characters who bring great comedy and drama to the story.
Final say: Almost a great coming out story. ★★★☆☆
