One of the greatest films and musicals of all-time, Singin’ in the Rain is a timeless piece that shows the best of its three leads and continues to entertain almost 70 years after its release.
When talkies become a sensation, Monumental Pictures decides that it has to jump into the talking movie business. Studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell) makes The Dancing Cavalier into a musical with stars Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), but substitutes Lina’s voice with Kathy Selden’s (Debbie Reynolds).
This film is full of some of the most memorable musical scenes including Kelly’s gorgeous title number dancing in the streets to Donald O’Connor’s “Make ‘Em Laugh” to the film’s final reveal of Lina and Kathy.
Reynolds is a strong match for Kelly and O’Connor, while Hagen’s villain is deliciously annoying.
Final say: Perfect. ★★★★★
